Meet Relational Therapist Caitlin Lowry

I am a counselor in the Orlando, Florida area who specializes in relational therapy. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families to identify current challenges they are facing and to help them develop solutions to their problems by making use of their strengths and values.

My Journey Toward Becoming A Therapist

I was introduced to the mental health field through my own recovery journey, and I became a therapist because I received indispensable therapy myself. Many skilled professionals helped me change the course of my life and I am eternally grateful. I try to pay it forward by helping others the way that I was helped.

Before studying mental health, my education focused on screenwriting and film studies. I love listening to people's stories and helping my clients write new chapters of their lives.  I utilize my knowledge of relational interpersonal skills within my own marriage daily. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, traveling, knitting, practicing yoga, dancing, horseback riding, and reading.

My Approach Keeps The Focus On Client Values

I utilize a relational approach to therapy, helping my clients to conceptualize their problems as patterns of relationship so that they may experience greater freedom in how they relate to and experience their problems. (1)

Many of my therapeutic interventions are inspired by Taoists and Zen practitioners and I enjoy incorporating mindfulness-based practices into sessions that aim to support the health, well-being, and wholeness of my clients. I invite clients to get curious about the challenges that brought them into therapy.

My goal is to open up possibilities for clients to respond differently to the problems or symptoms that have been causing them distress.

I honor my clients as being the experts of their own lives, and I aim to help them experience significant change by connecting to their problems and values. Clients can expect conversations focused on what is working for them, what isn’t working for them, and what they may be able to start doing differently to reach their therapeutic goals.

By focusing on values, I help individuals determine how they can start behaving in ways that are in accordance with their values and ultimately enable them to live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Some Of My Therapeutic Modalities

I enjoy working with both individuals and couples utilizing several modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Gottman Method couples therapy, and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.

With Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, people learn to accept the ups and downs of life, including their thoughts, feelings, and reactions, while committing to making behavioral changes based on their values so that they can live their best lives possible regardless of their circumstances.

Hypnotherapy sessions tap into the potential of the unconscious mind, which usually involves the use of stories, metaphors, and other hypnotic techniques that are tailored to peoples’ therapeutic goals.

With couples, I utilize Gottman’s research and principles to teach them how to better communicate, reconnect, and strengthen their relationship. My goal as a couples therapist, regardless of their presenting challenge or issue, is to help them learn how to speak to each other more effectively.

Learning a few relatively simple techniques can help shift couples’ relationships with each other, help them feel more connected, and enable them to better discuss and resolve conflict rather than avoid topics or problems.

Additionally, Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is an experiential form of animal-assisted therapy in which a mental health professional, an equine specialist, a horse, and a client work together to address clinical issues. Interacting with horses by participating in ground-based activities can address the client’s reasons for seeking therapy.

 Sessions are Client-Centered and Goal-Driven

I am earnest, direct, and enjoy using humor during sessions. I love practicing therapy and am grateful for all of the people I have the privilege of assisting. I find collaborating and learning with them to be an invigorating experience and am honored to accompany my clients on their therapeutic journeys.

I don't think that people need to be in therapy for years and years. As a therapist, my goal is to work myself out of a job. I try doing that by helping my clients to untangle their problems and then urging them to get back to living their lives. If another problem arises, they can come back to therapy. I am here to support my clients when they need it, but ultimately I want to empower them to support themselves.
